- Planning your training
You complete the regular theory and practical training for category B; we plan the automatic and manual parts with you.
- Schalten üben
Du übst mindestens zehn Einheiten zu jeweils 45 Minuten auf einem Schaltwagen.
- Schaltnachweis erbringen
In einer mindestens 15-minütigen Fahrt inner- und außerhalb geschlossener Ortschaften zeigst du deinem Fahrlehrer, dass du sicher schalten kannst. Die Fahrschule stellt den Nachweis aus.
- Automatikprüfung ablegen
Du legst die praktische Fahrerlaubnisprüfung auf Automatik ab. Mit der passenden Eintragung darfst du in Klasse B auch Schaltwagen fahren.
Die Fahrt mit dem Fahrlehrer ist keine zweite amtliche praktische Prüfung. Die reguläre Theorieprüfung bleibt Bestandteil des Ersterwerbs.

You complete the manual-gearbox proof, the Schaltnachweis.
- Applying for the change
You apply for the change at the Führerscheinstelle, the driving licence authority.
- Schaltberechtigung abwarten
Du fährst erst Schaltwagen, wenn die Automatikbeschränkung wirksam aufgehoben ist.
Bei einer aus der Automatikprüfung entstandenen Beschränkung ist dafür keine weitere amtliche praktische Prüfung nötig. Wurde die Beschränkung wegen gesundheitlicher Eignungsmängel erteilt, gilt dieser Weg nicht. Die Eintragung der Schlüsselzahl 197 muss innerhalb eines Jahres nach Abschluss der Schaltausbildung erfolgen.

Is B197 a different licence?
No. You obtain category B with an additional code (Schlüsselzahl). Within category B you may drive manual and automatic vehicles.
Do I have to take the practical test twice?
No. With B197 you take only one official practical test - in an automatic vehicle. You provide the manual-gearbox proof with your driving instructor during a test drive in a manual car. This is not a second official practical test.
Start at 17
How does accompanied driving work?
You can start the training early and drive from 17 with a registered accompanying person. BF17 is an age rule for B and BE; for the car licence you can choose the manual test, B197 or B78.

Who may accompany you?
Voraussetzungen für deine Begleitperson:
- Mindestalter 30 Jahre
- Seit mindestens fünf Jahren gültige Klasse B oder anerkannte entsprechende Fahrerlaubnis
- Bei Beantragung höchstens ein Punkt im Fahreignungsregister
- Namentliche Eintragung als Begleitperson
- Gültiger Führerschein bei jeder Begleitfahrt dabei

The accompanying person gives orientation and brief pointers. You drive the vehicle yourself. Drive only with a companion who meets the legal requirements during the drive as well; alcohol and other intoxicating substances have no place on a shared drive.

Do my parents have to accompany me?
No. Other people can be registered too, provided they meet the requirements.
Can I add further accompanying persons?
Yes. The authority can add them on application. They may only accompany you once the entry has been made.
May I drive alone if I pass before my birthday?
No. Before 17 you may not yet drive under BF17; until 18 the accompaniment requirement applies.

What may you drive with category B?

Which licence do you need?
What matters are the permissible total masses in the vehicle documents. They describe the maximum permitted weight, not just the current weight. You must additionally observe the towing capacity and the other technical limits of the towing vehicle.

How do you obtain category BE?
Category BE adds to your car driving licence. With it you may tow a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3.5 tonnes behind a category B vehicle. There is no theory test for BE. In the practical lessons you learn safe manoeuvring, coupling and uncoupling and driving with a trailer combination, among other things.

Why does the test vehicle matter?
Wenn deine bisherige Berechtigung zum Schalten auf B197 beruht und du die BE-Prüfung auf Automatik ablegst, kann BE auf Automatik beschränkt werden. That depends on the permissible total masses and the technical limits. Bring the vehicle documents with you; we will classify your combination.
Can I obtain B96 without a test?
Yes. After successfully completing the driver training you apply for the entry in your licence. We clarify the offer on request.
Do I need theory lessons for BE?
No additional theory training or theory test is provided for the extension from B to BE. The practical training and practical test are part of it.
Automatic by choice
When does B78 suit you?
B78 suits you if you want to drive automatic only in everyday life:

Does automatic mean no theory or special drives?
No. The type of gearbox does not change the requirements for first obtaining the licence. How many practice lessons you need depends on your learning progress.
Can I hire a manual car with B78?
You may not drive it yourself as long as the automatic-only restriction applies. Check the gearbox type before choosing a vehicle.

How many driving lessons do you need?
There is no fixed number of practice lessons. It depends on how quickly you master the necessary skills safely. For a first category B licence, the training also includes twelve special drives (Sonderfahrten) required by law:
- five overland drives of 45 minutes each
- four motorway drives of 45 minutes each
- three night drives of 45 minutes each
How long your training takes depends on several factors:
- The time you have available
- Your learning progress and how much support you need
- Processing time at the authority
- Available class, lesson and test dates
